6th Session, GCC Supreme Council
This stamp commemorates the 6th Session of the Supreme Council of the Gulf Cooperation Council (GCC), held in Muscat, Oman, in November 1985. The GCC comprising Bahrain, Kuwait, Oman, Qatar, Saudi Arabia, and the United Arab Emirates was established in 1981 to foster regional integration across political, economic, security, and cultural domains. The annual Supreme Council summit brought together the heads of state of the six member nations to address pressing regional issues and coordinate unified policy strategies. The 1985 summit in Muscat was a pivotal event for regional defense and economic cohesion, taking place against the backdrop of the escalating Iran-Iraq War and security threats in the Persian Gulf. During this session, GCC leaders reviewed progress on the Economic Agreement, discussed joint defense measures, and reinforced strategies to protect regional navigation and economic stability. For the Sultanate of Oman, hosting the summit under Sultan Qaboos bin Said underscored its vital diplomatic role within the Arabian Peninsula and its commitment to collective security, regional harmony, and Gulf integration.
