Symposium of Traditional Music of Oman
This stamp commemorates the International Symposium on Traditional Omani Music (الندوة الدولية للموسيقى التقليدية العمانية), held in Muscat from October 6 to 16, 1985. Organized under the direct patronage of Sultan Qaboos bin Said, the landmark international gathering convened ethnomusicologists, cultural historians, and music scholars from around the world to study, document, and preserve the rich intangible heritage of Omani folk music and dance. The 1985 symposium marked a crucial turning point in Oman's cultural preservation efforts, serving as the official catalyst for the establishment of the Oman Centre for Traditional Music. Prior to this initiative, Omani musical traditions were passed down purely through oral transmission across diverse regional genres—ranging from desert bedouin chants to coastal maritime sea songs. By hosting the conference and launching a nation-wide archival field survey, Oman systematically cataloged tens of thousands of audiovisual recordings and musical instruments, cementing its unique musical identity within the broader Arab and Indian Ocean cultural landscapes.
