Restoration of Jabrin Palace
This stamp commemorates the restoration of Jabrin Palace (also known as Jabreen Castle), issued by the Sultanate of Oman in 1985. Originally constructed in the late 17th century by Imam Bil'arab bin Sultan of the Yaruba dynasty, the palace served not as a primary military stronghold, but as a refined royal residence, administrative seat, and a prominent center of learning for Islamic law, medicine, and astronomy. Over time, the grand structure suffered significant environmental decay and structural deterioration. The event marked by this issue celebrates the successful completion of a comprehensive state-led restoration project undertaken during the early 1980s by the Omani Ministry of National Heritage and Culture. Artisans and preservation experts meticulously restored the palace's intricate carved wooden balconies, ornate plasterwork, and famous hand-painted ceiling motifs using traditional materials and techniques. By highlighting the transformation on national postage, Oman celebrated the preservation of its architectural heritage as part of Sultan Qaboos bin Said’s broader effort to safeguard the nation's cultural identity alongside modern development.
