Geranium Mascatense
Geranium mascatense (commonly known as the Muscat cranesbill) is a highly specialized, delicate annual or ephemeral herb belonging to the Geraniaceae family. Endemic to the rocky limestone ledges, shady rock crevices, and seasonal wadi banks of the Al Hajar Mountains in northern Oman and parts of neighboring Iran, this small plant has adapted beautifully to the hyper-arid microclimates of the southeastern Arabian Peninsula. It features slender, spreading stems and deeply palmately lobed, rounded leaves covered in fine hairs to control moisture loss. During the brief winter rainy season, it quickly bursts into bloom, displaying striking five-petalled, rose-pink to magenta flowers featuring a darker, distinctive central "eye" that acts as a beacon for desert pollinators.
