Annual Pilgrimage to Mecca (1981)
Issued in September 1981 to coincide with the sacred pilgrimage season, this 50 Baisa commemorative stamp from the Sultanate of Oman honors the Annual Pilgrimage to Mecca (الحج). Framed by a muted olive-gold border, the stamp features a highly detailed, emotive painted vignette depicting Muslim pilgrims clad in the traditional white ihram clothing. In the center foreground, a pilgrim is shown in deep supplication with hands raised in prayer, while the background captures a massive stream of believers performing religious rites. Along the bottom edge, the issue explicitly links the Gregorian date with the Islamic calendar year
The stamp's technical and administrative details are neatly balanced throughout the layout. The top margin bears the country's name in English on the left and elegant Arabic script (سلطنة عمان) on the right, flanking a small square containing the red national emblem of Oman. The bottom left corner indicates the denomination as "POSTAGE 50 BAISA," mirrored on the right with the Eastern Arabic numeral equivalent (٥٠ بيسة). Printed by Oriental Press, Bahrain, this issue holds a significant place in regional postal history by highlighting the deeply rooted spiritual traditions of the Omani population, celebrating the unity of the global Islamic community during a period of rapid national and infrastructural growth.
